More than 2,400 practitioners work with 200,000+ clients every year. The Tomatis® method is a type of sound therapy and is a natural approach to neurosensory stimulation, similar to auditory integration training. Its listening programs change the music and voice in real-time in order to capture the brain’s attention and aims to develop and improve motor, emotional, and cognitive skills. The Tomatis® method also helps with balance and coordination difficulties and helps people manage depression and anxiety. Some people have used it to help with learning a new language.

Who pioneered the Tomatis® method?

This method was developed by the French Doctor and Researcher, Alfred Tomatis, the Tomatis® Method relies on advanced technology and the excellence of its trained professionals on how to use it.
Hearing is a passive process in which the ear simply perceives sound. It’s possible to hear sounds without actually taking in the meaning of what you’re hearing.
Dr. Tomatis believed that people who can hear might not be able to listen properly because their middle ear muscles aren’t working properly. He also believed that listening ability affects spoken and written language development and communication.
According to Dr. Tomatis, listening to modified high-frequency music can exercise the muscles in the ear and can stimulate connections between the ear and the brain.
The Tomatis® Method exercises the ears emphasizing the high-frequency sounds that stimulate the brain.
In observing the effects of different kinds of music, Dr. Tomatis came to the conclusion that none of them produced the sought after therapeutic effects like that of Mozart’s.
Mozart’s score achieved the perfect balance between the relaxing and energizing effects of sound. The high-frequency music of Mozart is energizing; while Gregorian Chant actually slows down the heartbeat and promotes deep relaxation.

What does the Tomatis® method involve?

The therapy involves the person listening to music (usually Mozart and Gregorian chants) with special headphones that transmit sound directly to the bones as well as through the air. The music has been filtered using an electronic device called the ‘electronic ear’ to put emphasis on the high-frequency sounds.
Sound travels to the inner ear through air conduction and bone conduction. In air conduction, sound travels through the outer ear to the middle ear, where it’s changed to bone conduction and is sent to the inner ear. In bone conduction, sound travels through the skull directly to the inner ear, bypassing the middle ear.
